A busy commercial port, a tourist
destination complete with beaches and resorts, the seat commerce and
business—there are many faces of Colombo.
The country’s telecom sector is poised for rapid progress. At
present, the focus areas are to open the market to competition and
build network infrastructure.
There are a range of significant initiatives in place that promise
to boost these factors. The Government has funded the installation
of payphones across the countryside. By 2004 there were already
204,000 payphones installed. By then there were 4.8 million
telephone lines in the country and an installed capacity of 5.8
million lines. Digitalization has almost reached 100 per cent. Sri
Lanka is also the 3G capital of the SAARC region.
There are still hurdles to be crossed, though. At the end of 2005,
the fixed line tele-density was a low 5 per cent, in comparison to
the burgeoning demand. There were 250,000 fixed line subscribers,
waiting for basic telephone services in 2002 which grew to 400,000
at end-2004.
To overcome these hurdles, the Government as well as the industry
are working hard. And it is in the midst of this action that we will
be there in Sri Lanka, watching the excitement first-hand.
While there, you can take the opportunity to explore several
noteworthy monuments of Colombo—Buddhist and Hindu temples, mosques
and churches that tell of the country’s diverse culture. Stroll
along Galle Face Green for a fantastic view of the Indian Ocean and
spectacular sunsets, or pick up a good bargain at the bustling
Pettah area bazaar. Museums and art galleries abound for the
culturally inclined and delicious street food for the gastronomical
complete the Colombo experience.
Other parts of Sri Lanka are also waiting to be explored. From the
ancient city of Anuradhapura that dates back to 500 BC and is a
World Heritage site, to the fabulous beaches of the west, east and
north coasts, excellent tourism facilities make travel easy and
affordable. Nature lovers can visit the numerous national parks all
over the country, especially the unique lagoon locations on the
southeastern coast. |
